Co-op

Fairtrade Wines are the top selling product in the Co-op Fairtrade range
Well-known local wine expert, Hamish Marett-Crosby, praised them at a wine-tasting in November 2009.  He visited South African producers who stressed that quality was their first priority.  They realised that unless they were good shoppers would only buy their wine once.
This guide to some of the Fairtrade wines available was given by Martin Flageul of Victor Hugo Wines

Since 2005 The Du Toitskloof cellars which are based at the foot of the mountain range of the same name have been supplying Co-op with FAIRTRADE wines. The region of Breede River Valley in the Western Cape has the ideal climate and soil variation to produce some excellent wines and many varieties.
Their sparkling wine is made in the same method as French Champagne; that is to say that the secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle in which the wine is served. The persistent small bubbles and fine mousse are signs of quality. Its pale yellow colour is derived from 100% Chardonnay. It is deliciously crisp with some floral characteristics, biscuity and citrus on the nose with a fruity style and long creamy finish. It is the perfect aperitif and also can be served with light starters and fish dishes.

Du Toitskloof Sauvignon Blanc is characteristic of this grape variety with typical powerful aromas of gooseberries, grapefruit and apple. On the mouth this wine is zesty, crisp and dry with tropical fruit flavours and hints of asparagus. Ideal with light dishes such as chicken, grilled prawns & seared tuna.

Cabernet-Sauvignon from Breede River Valley in South Africa's Cape region is full bodied, warm tasting with spicy blackcurrant flavours. At 14% ABV this is not a lightweight and would certainly not go amiss with a beef stew or barbecue.

The Chardonnay from Du Toitskloof with its light buttery and citrus aromas which follow through into the mouth, giving a creamy vanilla finish goes very well with light meats, poultry and fish dishes.

Pinot Grigio from Argentina produced in the region of La Riojana in Northern Argentina launched its first Fairtrade wines in UK in 2006. Pinot Grigio has recently become a really popular white wine throughout the world. Originally from Italy this lovely grape varietal produces aromatic floral notes with grapey aromas followed by refreshing apple and citrus flavours and delicately crisp finish. This wine goes extremely well with Thai and Chinese cuisine and other light spicy dishes.

Malbec Rose  from Argentina is quite a new style because Malbec was once famed only for the black wines of Cahors in France or used as a part of some blends in Bordeaux but it has really made its name in Argentina more particularly as a red wine. The Mendoza Fairtrade vineyards have produced this Rose Wine using 100% Malbec allowing just enough skin contact to give the pink colour and to make an off-dry style. The aromas of strawberry and raspberry continue in the taste, softening the acidity and alcohol to make a really fruity finish. Although goes well with Pasta dishes it also matches many desserts, particularly if fresh berried fruits are included.

Carmenere from Chile was awarded the Fairtrade label for the Los Robles vineyards in 2004 and comes from the fertile Valley of Curico which allows great development of flavours in red wines. Carmenere, originally from Bordeaux, has many similarities to Merlot. This red is full bodied with an intense bouquet of damsons and plums, ripe black-berried fruits linger in the mouth and finally there might be detected a hint of fresh mint on the palate. It is a wine that can go well with fuller flavoured poultry dishes with sauce and is particularly good with lamb cutlets or roast lamb.

A blend of Cabernet-Sauvignon/Merlot and a blend of Sauvignon-Blanc/Semillon from Thandi in Western Cape have been introduced to Jersey during the last year by Victor Hugo Wines. From South Africa these wines also carry the Fairtrade label and the red is soft easy drinking with excellent harmony of fruit, tannins & acidity. It is ideal with all light to medium meat and poultry dishes and hard or cream cheeses. The white wine has an aromatic nose with fresh zesty lemons and some herbaceous notes. This is ideal on its own or with any light dishes and goes very well with shellfish and seafood.
The continued search to extend their range of Fairtrade wines is a priority for Victor Hugo Wines.
