60 of the flags were decorated at a stall in the precinct during Fairtrade Fortnight (on Sat.March 5th), the rest by groups from Jersey College for Girls Prep, Plat Douet School, Georgetown Monday group and activity group, W.I. groups and others. They are Jersey's contribution to a
Guinness World Record attempt to make the Longest and fairest-ever piece of bunting
Current record : 2,696 metres
Our target : 4350 metres
Jersey bunting will join with others, nationwide, for display on World Fairtrade day on Saturday May 14th.
12,500 flags will be one for each Fairtrade cotton farmer in Mali and Burkina Faso.
Cotton farmers are trapped in poverty by the trade distorting subsidies given to farmers in the EU and the USA. Their income is one-third what it was in 1970 !!
