Fairtrade Fortnight headlines

The Fortnight began with a launch at the White Gallery, Jersey Pottery of posters designed by primary school pupils. Our patron, Dr. Lee Durrell, presented awards to the best overall, Sol Gibaut and Ben Hutcheson of La Moye School and the best in each of the schools, Che Irwin of Grouville, Tatum Gotel of Helvetia and Charlotte Truscott and Hannah Owens of Convent FCJ.    Abi Petit from Gossypium, the Fairtrade cotton company she has set up, was here on Thursday March 3rd/Friday 4th.  She spoke on Ethical consumerism to students at Hautlieu and on Technical design to students at JCG and Beaulieu.  She also spoke at a Fairtrade dinner for over 40 people at Highlands Academy Restaurant

On Saturday March 5th, a Fairtrade breakfast was held at Georgetown Methodist Church from 8.15 to 9.45.  About 30 people attended and £143 was raised for Traidcraft.   Then a stall promoting Divine chocolate was set up at Ransoms Garden Centre, who have recently gone Fairtrade.   In the precinct, outside M & S, over 60 people decorated their cotton flags in imaginative ways.  These flags will be added to others decorated in Jersey and the UK to make a world record length banner on Sat May 14th.    We also collected over 100 signatures for a petition to the E.U. to reduce their subsiidies for cotton farmers in the EU.   Subsidies have depressed the world price for cotton, keeping African farmers in poverty.

Five members of the Fairtrade group each presented a 3 minutes talk on Radio Jersey's 'Morning Thought' during the first week.

James Lloyd from Ethletic, a Fairtrade sportsball company came on Mon. 7th March.  One of his Fairtrade sports balls are being presented to each primary school, thanks to sponsorship by the C.I. Co-op.  Another one was won by each of the semifinalists of the primary football on Jan 22nd and primary netball competitions on March 12th.  James spoke at Victoria College Prep and at Les Quennevais School and also at a wine and chocolate evening at St Pauls Centre from 7 to 9 pm.   His sports balls and also sports shoes are available from Total Sport at Beaumont.

The photos show the St.Michaels team, winners at Les Quennevais and Beaulieu runners up at Les Quennevais and Plat Douet, winners at Oakfield
